History of Penn Brewery
Originating with Eberhardt & Ober

This Document First Published: September 7, 2017

This is a collection of works pertaining to the origins of the Eberhardt & Ober Brewery on what is now Pittsburgh’s North Side. Actually, E & O started as the Conrad Eberhardt Brewery with the Ober Brewery as a neighbor. One of the Ober sons joined Conrad’s son and that led to the Eberhardt & Ober Brewery. The E & O Brewery along with the Ober Brewery worked together to the point that they were nearly one brewery. They both merged into the umbrella of the Pittsburgh Brewing Company. They survived prohibition and were a major brewery until the 1950’s when they closed. Slightly thirty years later come Tom Pastorius and the brewery site is resurrected as the Allegheny Brewery and Pub, later to be renamed Penn Brewery.

The history is presented in a time-line fashion as my intent is to bring facts, dates and information together in one place. Sometimes I get things wrong and I am always looking for updates so please send comments, questions or a pat on the back. Don’t feel bad about correcting me as I want this to be accurate.
